Solar return basics

What Is a Solar Return?

In astrology, a solar return is the annual moment when the Sun returns to the same zodiacal longitude it occupied when you were born. Astrologers create a chart for that moment and interpret it as a symbolic portrait of themes for the year ahead.

Is a solar return the same as your birthday?

Not exactly. Your calendar birthday begins at midnight on a particular date. A solar return is a specific astronomical moment, which may fall a little before or after that date. Its timing also depends on your original birth details and the year being considered.

That is why a solar return report may display a date or local time that surprises you, even if you already know your birthday by heart.

What is in a solar return chart?

A solar return chart includes the positions of the Sun and other planets at that moment, plus angles such as the Ascendant and Midheaven and the twelve astrological houses. Astrologers symbolically connect different areas of the chart with relationships, work, family, creativity and other life themes.

These ideas belong to astrological tradition. They are interpretations, not medically, financially or scientifically validated predictions.

Why do birth time and birth place matter?

To calculate a natal chart and identify the solar return timing, astrologers use your birth date, local birth time and place of birth. A different birth time can change the timing of the return and the chart's house placements, so an accurate time is preferred.

If you do not know the exact time, you may still explore an approximate reading at Birthday Stars, but its recommendations are less certain. See the birth time guide.

Why would location change an annual chart?

At one exact moment, planetary positions in the zodiac remain essentially the same wherever you travel. But the horizon and local meridian differ by location, changing the Ascendant, Midheaven and house placements in a relocated chart. This is the basis of solar return relocation, which some astrologers use to compare places to spend a birthday.

Can your solar return chart guarantee a better year?

No. There is no established scientific evidence that choosing a particular birthday location causes better relationships, finances, health or career outcomes. You can use a solar return reading for reflection, travel inspiration and entertainment while keeping practical considerations at the center of your plans.
